Town Cafe, Bolton Town Centre

There were no smells of chip fat emanating from the Town Cafe, but the place was packed. That was enough to entice us in. The place was narrow, with fixed tables and chairs down both sides and a small counter at the bottom end. As we made our way to the counter, there were countless people tucking in to hearty breakfasts (it was 2pm). I fancied the look of an omelette and chips I saw. A waiter said hiya to me and I asked if he came to us or whether we ordered at the counter. He said he would come to us. We found a table and perused the menu card. Straightaway Danny said he wanted liver and onions. I spotted they did lamb chops and chips, I couldn’t resist it.  The waiter came over and took our drinks order. Danny was disappointed they had run out of decaf coffee so he settled for a glass of milk. I ummed and aahed over the coffees but decided on a diet coke (with my chops and chips).  Drinks came straightaway, then he took our food order. The waiter asked me if I would like gravy and seemed very upset with me when I said I didn’t want it.

A couple sat down a table away and I tried, unsuccessfully, to take a photo of them without them noticing. I had to pretend I was texting. People all around us, who I said had come in after us, were getting their food, so I had a moan to Danny about it.  When the food arrived, I forgot about my moaning and couldn’t wait to tuck in. Danny’s liver and onions cost £2.00, my chops, chips, peas and carrots  was £5.00. Both of us left clean plates. The couple to the left of us were becoming rather perplexed that their meals had not arrived. I heard the woman asking the waiter just how long it was going to be. The man repeated 3 or 4 times that he was not waiting any longer. The waiter seemed lost for words. The man accused the waiter of being ignorant.  As I was picking the bones of my lamb chops I heard the man shout “wanker” on his way out.  Me and Danny paid at the counter, I gave my compliments to the chef and threw a pound in the tips bowl. The handsome chef smiled and winked at me as I turned to walk out.
